Yamaha Acoustic Pianos

The best of both worlds—acoustic and digital—in a single instrument

Yamaha Silent Series upright pianos give you the incomparable tone, touch and beauty of a fine traditional piano, along with all the added advantages of a superb digital piano available on demand.

Silent Upright Pianos: The Inside Story

Quick Silent System™
The Quick Silent System for upright pianos combines a hammer restraint mechanism with optical sensors and digital tone generation. A shift of the center pedal stops the hammers from striking the strings, outwardly silencing the piano, while the sensors and tone generator then digitally reproduce the acoustic piano sound.

System activation
- A hammer shank stopper, operated by the center pedal, silences the acoustic sound.
- An electronic control unit is attached below the right side of the keyboard, with power switch and pilot lamp, headphone jacks, and volume and reverb controls.

Optical key sensors
- Individual optical fiber sensors, located beneath the inner end of each key, capture the precise motion of the keys for Silent reproduction.
- Continuous-position sensing accurately registers keystroke force and timing.
- Real-time keystroke information is instantly transmitted to the tone generator.
- Non-mechanical, optical operation leaves key touch and motion unaffected.

Pedal sensors
- A continuous sensor for the sustain pedal allows precise half-pedaling control.
- An on/off sensor registers the action of the soft pedal.

Digital tone generation
- AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) stereo sampling from the Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand provides rich, realistic digital sound for Silent piano performance.
- Three selectable reverb effects with continuous depth control simulate chamber and hall acoustics, for an enhanced sense of spatial realism.
- Continuous volume control allows the player to adjust headphone volume levels.
- Adjustable pitch makes it possible to play along with MIDI or audio accompaniment.

Versatile connections
- Dual headphone jacks on the face of the control unit allow two people to play, or one to listen in—great for duets, teaching or private serenades.
- MIDI In and MIDI Out terminals let you control other electronic music devices from the piano keyboard, or access the digital piano sound from external equipment like sequencers or computers.
- AUX In and AUX Out terminals make it possible to play along with recorded music through the headphones, or amplify or record the piano's digital performance.

Yamaha Motif ES 7

The Yamaha Motif ES7 Keyboard workstation provides all the tools any musician could want. Continuing Yamaha's tradition of excellence in the MOTIF line the new Motif ES synthesizer series is expanded inside and out for unprecedented performance and expressive control.

An Enhanced Soundset with an Evolved Synthesis Engine
Not only do the new MOTIF ES Music Production Synthesizers feature the largest wave ROM of any workstation keyboard available (175 megabytes in 16-bit linear format), but that Extensive Sonic library is at the heart of the most expressive, most musical synthesis system on the planet, bar none. The Enhanced Sound set of the ES 1,859 waveforms – the majority of them newly sampled specifically for the MOTIF ES series – provide the foundation for 1024 outstanding normal voices plus 65 drum kits. There are even Mix Voices so you can edit and create your own Voices while listening to your songs and store them right along with the song data. The Motif ES delivers an extraordinary sonic depth and musical response. The range of sounds it produces is stunning - from the Emulative Sounds of acoustic piano and orchestra to the Extreme Synthesis of cutting-edge hiphop and electronica. You only have to hear the ES once to know this is the best sounding, most Evolved Synthesizer Yamaha has ever made.

The Heart of the Expanded System
The newly designed tone generator chip offers true 128-note polyphony that gives you the freedom to create intricate compositions using the full gamut of the MOTIF ES Exceptional Sonic power. These instruments are designed for serious music production. The newly developed synth engine offers new synthesizer parameters and faster, more precise envelope control.

Expressive Sampled Sounds with the New Mega Voice System
A significant leap forward from simple single layer samples, “Mega Voice” technology makes it possible to include all the nuances of an instrument’s real time performance. Imagine a guitar voice, for example, with hammer-ons, pull-offs, harmonics, slides, fret noises, and other elements of the "real thing" all accessible from the keyboard at the same time. Mega Voice technology takes MOTIF ES guitar, bass, and other instrument voices to new expressive heights.

Enhanced Signal Processing Effects System
If you’ve ever felt limited by the Effect Systems in other keyboards, be prepared for total liberation: system effects include 20 reverb types and 49 chorus/delay types, while each Voice can have two large blocks of 116 insertion effect types. In the song or pattern modes, up to Eight Separate parts can have their voice insertion Effects Simultaneously. There’s also independent three-band part EQ Settings for each of the 16 parts in Mix, eight types of mastering effects including multi band compression, and a five-band master EQ to complete your productions right to the final mastering stage. New reverbs, vintage phasors, flangers and wahwahs ensure that you get the highest quality effects that are available in Yamaha’s vast arsenal of DSP algorithms.

Easy Sequencing with the Advanced Phrase Factory Arpeggiator
Much more than a simple arpeggiator, the MOTIF ES Phrase Factory offers unprecedented versatility for creating sequenced phrases. Use it with the drum kits to produce innovative rhythm patterns, or take advantage of its chord-recognition capabilities to generate pitched phrases using the normal voices. You have 1787 preset arpeggiator phrases to start with — from standard synth arps to drum loops to natural-sounding acoustic-instrument grooves. The Phrase Factory system works seamlessly with Mega Voice technology so you can take advantage of all the expressive Mega Voice nuances. You can even assign five different arp phrases to the switches below the display and switch them in real time. Plus the arpeggiator’s performance play parameters like Swing, Velocity and Quantize let you easily modify preset or user arps and make them your own. Finally real time loop re-mix let’s you create literally thousands of instant variations on these musical Motifs.

Exceptional Sampling & Extensive Sequencing with ISS
The Integrated Sampling Sequencer in the ES provides the seamless integration of MIDI and audio sample sequencing places the MOTIF ES synthesizers right on the leading edge of music production. Of course you can BPM-sync playback of MIDI and sample loops, and our Time Slice function lets you handle samples with the same freedom as MIDI sequence data without altering pitch or losing audio quality. A maximum sample RAM (DIMM) capacity of 512 megabytes places the MOTIF ES sampler section in the same league as some of the most advanced stand-alone samplers available. You can trim, normalize, and time-stretch your samples in any way your music requires, and a range of editing functions including Loop Remix offer precision waveform editing capability. The sequencer section can handle up to 226,000 notes in 16 tracks, and with an extensive range of playback control options you are only limited by your imagination.

Expressive Surface for Real Time Control
For truly musical expression there’s no substitute for real-time hands-on control. The MOTIF ES gives you four rotary controllers and four faders that can be assigned to control filters, volume, effects, envelops… any of an extensive range of voice parameters. These same controls provide a digital mixer feel when mixing multiple sequenced parts. They can also be used as MIDI controllers to control external MIDI devices. We’ve even added a ribbon controller for intimate fingertip voice control. And since you need to be able to find and recall voices as quickly as possible, the MOTIF ES synthesizers feature a Category Search function. The Category Search function includes a Favorite category that can store up to 128 of the voices that you use most frequently for instant recall from any mode.

Elegant System Integration with DAWs
If you use a computer-based sequencer or DAW as part of your music production setup, with press of a button you can turn the MOTIF ES into a full function control surface that supports the same protocols as the new 01X Mlan Mixing Studio. Simply connect a USB cable between the instrument’s “TO HOST” USB port and your computer’s USB port, and you can directly access your sequencer/DAW software’s fader, pan, EQ effect send, track mute, transport, and other parameters from the MOTIF ES controllers. You can even open and close windows on your computer directly from your ES.

Expandable Setups via USB and mLAN Networking
In addition to the USB “TO HOST” port mentioned above, the MOTIF ES synthesizers feature a USB “TO DEVICE” port that can be connected to a USB storage device such as hard disks, flash disks, or card memory readers for convenient, safe external storage of your samples, sequences, and other production data. When you want to move up to mLAN networking — Yamaha’s high-performance music networking protocol — simply install the optional mLAN16E expansion board (available soon) in your MOTIF ES synthesizer and you’re ready to network and share multiple ports of MIDI data and multiple channels of 24-bit/96 kHz audio data with other mLAN compatible devices or computers with 1394 Firewire connectors.

Yamaha S90 ES Synthesizer

Fine feel, flexibility, and sounds!
The Yamaha S90 ES Synthesizer combines a stunningly natural acoustic piano sound with all the sonic flexibility of the award-winning MOTIF ES. The piano keyboard uses a new multi-velocity, stereo grand piano sample with sound board simulation and half dampening (when used with the FC3 pedal) that is incredibly rich and realistic the best Yamaha has ever put into a synthesizer. The 128-note polyphony tone generator, Studio Connections compatibility, mLAN expansion slot, and PLG expandability give it all the synthesis power and control capabilities of the Yamaha MOTIF ES line.

The most expressive piano voice of any synth
Played at normal tempos and dynamic levels the sound of the Yamaha S90 ES is truly superb, but it's at the opposite end of the tempo and dynamic range that the results are most stunning. The longer waves give each note a very natural sustain that, when used on ballads and slow, exposed pieces, plays expressively with a full, natural sound. This voice also features stretch tuning and a damper resonance effect offering even more realism.

Half-damper capability
Some classic pieces call for a half damper technique where the damper pedal is pressed halfway down raising the felts only partially off the strings. As the sustain function on most synths is a simple on/off operation, such use is normally impossible. The S90 ES, however, is able to respond to small changes in the FC-3 foot controllers pedal position due to its half-damper capability. This gives the performer greater control over the muting by the damper, and expressive freedom to create the subtle nuances required by the music.

Tone generation derived from the MOTIF ES
Using a powerful new tone generator derived from the MOTIF ES, the Yamaha S90 ES produces voices with stunning clarity and great response that heightens the musical experience for both you and your listeners. To meet the needs of todays players its 228MB (when converted to 16-bit linear format) of wave memory holds an enormous library of expressive voices and drum kits, many of which come from the MOTIF ES, that cover everything from acoustic pianos and orchestra to cutting-edge hip-hop and electronica.

88 keys for full piano range
An 88-note weighted action keyboard based on Yamaha's acoustic piano designs offers players a feel that is natural, smooth, and responsive especially on keyboard voices like the acoustic grands and electric grands. For its non-keyboard instruments like basses, drums, and percussion, which require slightly varied playing styles, the action is evenly balanced from top to bottom making these instruments feel and play more responsively. Aftertouch is also included so you can gain more expression from every note.New signal processing effects systemThe S90 ES takes great advantage of the processing power inherited from the Yamaha MOTIF ES to produce effects like damper resonance, reverb, and others with stunning clarity. This power also enhances its multitimbral capabilities. The system is designed with 2 blocks of insertion effects (117 types) for each voice and 2 overall system effects that include 20 reverb types and 49 chorus/delay effects. This way you can apply the right type of signal processing where it is needed most. Even in song or pattern modes you won't feel confined since voice insertion effects can be applied on up to 8 individual parts simultaneously. Further sound tailoring is available with 3-band individual part EQ settings, 8 types of mastering effects, and a 5-band master EQ.

Seamless system integration
Compatibility with Studio Connections lets the Yamaha S90 ES function as if it were a plug-in within compatible DAW applications such as Cubase and Nuendo. Hardware and software systems integrate seamlessly in this environment where total recall of entire hardware/software systems is possible. In other DAW systems, the S90 ES's sliders, knobs and data dial can be used to control start/stop of record or playback, track volumes, panning and more to increase system efficiency.

Yamaha S90 ES Synthesizer Features:
- 88-key balanced hammer-action with aftertouch
- Complete MOTIF ES Wave ROM
- 32MB S700 acoustic piano with sound board simulation
- 128-polyphony, 8 Part-ins effect, reverb, mastering, and master EQ
- MIDI master keyboard functions
- Full function remote control for DAW/VST software
- Half-damper (requires FC3 pedal)
- 3 PLG slots
- Optional mLAN16E card to turn your S90 ES into a multi-channel ASIO soundcard
